Aalborg CSP A/S and Alfa Laval AB has signed an agreement, where Alfa Laval takes part ownership in Aalborg CSP’s header-coil heat exchanger business for high temperature energy storage to electricity and industrial high temperature steam. With the investment, the parties form a strong joint venture to cooperate in fulfilling the future demand for specialized heat exchangers for, among other things, molten salt energy storage systems as well as for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and other applications. The heat exchanger joint venture will operate under the name “Alfa Laval Aalborg Header-coil A/S”.

The collaboration aims at addressing the increasing global need for reliable heat exchangers and salt systems for long duration energy storage applications thereby enhancing competences, product development, and application knowledge in the header-coil heat exchanger technology. The purpose of the joint venture is, likewise, to drive the advancement of, among other things, steam generation systems, molten salt heat exchangers, PTX-salt systems, Carnot batteries for thermal-electrical storage and power blocks for the next generation of long duration energy storages ultimately enabling a future 100% renewable energy system.

Jo Vanhoren, President of Business Unit Welded heat exchangers of Alfa Laval states, “The energy landscape is in full transition and puts much more demand on reliable and efficient heat transfer solutions. Likewise, the storage of energy is becoming increasingly important as the share of renewable energy continues to grow and grid stability needs to be secured. Alfa Laval has a wide range of heat exchanger solutions available and by partnering with Aalborg CSP we can further extend our offering withing the field of molten salt. Both the excellent applications expertise as well as the unique heat exchanger reliability in molten salt applications make Aalborg CSP the perfect match for Alfa Laval.”

Aalborg CSP’s header-coil heat exchangers are extremely reliable with no leakages and can withstand cyclical load patterns, which is the daily operation pattern of both CSP and energy storage plants.

“Alfa Laval and Aalborg CSP will partner in making heat exchangers for renewable energy systems of the future, where long duration energy storages are key in capturing, storing and integrating renewable energy sources to ultimately reach a Net Zero Emission. By partnering with Alfa Laval, we have found the ideal partner for further scaling of our business and in particularly for meeting the increasing demand for sustainable energy storage solutions with molten salt” Svante Bundgaard, CEO of Aalborg CSP states.

The vision of Changing Energy by creating competitive renewable energy solutions continues to be Aalborg CSP’s ambition and remains at the forefront of everything the company does. The joint venture will accelerate the company’s progress to develop and supply green technologies and integrated energy solutions to lower the cost of energy for industries and power plants worldwide ultimately driving positive change in the energy sector.
