Task 45

Accelerating the uptake of large thermal energy storage

About TASK 45

Task 45 is an international collaboration under the IEA Energy Storage Technology Collaboration Programme. Its aim is to provide the framework and knowledge to enable accelerated market introduction of large-scale thermal energy storage technologies. The focus is on technologies at higher readiness levels, addressing the questions and challenges of project developers, planners, designers and operators through guidelines, best practices and pre-standardisation work.

End of project

December 2027

The challenge

District heating systems can only reach high shares of renewable heat if large thermal energy storage is integrated. Wider market uptake requires shared guidelines, performance assessment methods and a common basis for evaluating and communicating storage performance.

Our role

Aalborg CSP contributes engineering expertise on high-readiness large-scale thermal storage, including performance assessment and guidance for decision-makers.
