AVANGUARD
Long-duration energy storage across power, heat and gas networks
About AVANGUARD
Europe's energy transition depends on storing renewable energy over long periods and dispatching it when needed the most. That is the promise of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), and the challenge AVANGUARD is built to address. The project aims to create a free, open-source platform giving all LDES stakeholders the tools to evaluate, plan, design and accelerate LDES deployment across Europe. AVANGUARD has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101269474.
Project duration
June 2026 - April 2030
The challenge
As electricity, heating and gas networks become increasingly interconnected, the energy system needs storage that can shift large amounts of energy across time, sectors and regions. Long-duration energy storage is a key piece in making renewable-based networks reliable and cost-effective.
Our role
Aalborg CSP contributes to the design and modelling of thermo-mechanical long-duration energy storage, drawing on close to four decades of thermal engineering experience.
