NeXt CO2 Vision

Surplus heat from Power-to-X and carbon capture into district heating

About NeXt CO2 Vision

NeXt CO2 Vision is a concept and development project under the CO2Vision initiative in Northern Denmark. It maps, models and analyses resource flows and synergies across the energy value chain of carbon capture and Power-to-X, with a particular focus on how surplus heat from these facilities can be used most optimally in the energy supply, phasing out fossil fuels and reducing the resources needed to produce energy.

Project duration

until April 2027

The challenge

Surplus heat is expected to play an important role in the future energy system, but realising it requires computational development, local collaboration and proven solutions. In Aalborg, the challenge is concrete: Nordjyllandsværket, which today supplies around 60% of the city's heat, is being phased out, while new carbon capture and Power-to-X facilities are planned that will generate significant amounts of surplus heat.

Our role

Aalborg CSP develops calculation methods, models and concepts for production and thermal storage technologies, tested in a practical case with Aalborg Forsyning using digital twins of the processes. The solutions developed can subsequently be commercialised and delivered by Aalborg CSP for carbon capture, Power-to-X and utility applications.
